USPA NEWS - This Thursday, October 12, Spain celebrated its National Day, Hispanic Heritage Day, which commemorates the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Kings Felipe VI and Letizia, together with the Princess of Asturias, Leonor de Borbón, presided over the solemn ceremony of tribute to the Flag and the military parade that was held in the Cánovas del Castillo Square of Madrid. Subsequently, the Kings, accompanied by the Princess of Asturias, offered the traditional commemorative reception for the National Day at the Royal Palace of Madrid.
Felipe VI and Letizia, together with the Princess of Asturias, presided as every year over the solemn ceremony of tribute to the National Flag and the military parade that, on this occasion, took place in the Cánovas del Castillo Square. After the arrival of the Kings and the Princess to the Cánovas del Castillo Square, escorted by the Royal Escort Squadron, they were received by the acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón, and State authorities, members of the Government , presidents of Autonomous Communities present at the event and authorities of the Ministry of Defense and the Interior. The acting president of the Government was received with boos by the public present, in protest of the negotiations that he is carrying out with pro-independence groups to obtain his support in the investiture.
Next, the Kings and the Princess received honors from a battalion of the Royal Guard and the King reviewed the formation. After, the events began: the Air Force Parachuting Acrobatic Patrol (PAPEA) carried out a launch to land near the Royal Tribune, carrying the National Flag that three Royal Guards, representatives of each of the Armies, Civil Guard and National Police belonging to the Security Service of the King's House, stood in the place planned for its Hoisting to the strains of the National Anthem.
Later, the Tribute was made to those who gave their lives for Spain, for which the King and Princess of Asturias, on the platform that housed the National Flag, placed the offering of the laurel wreath, and at the sound of prayer the produced the overflight of the 'Águila' Acrobatic Patrol and the discharge of rifle fire by the 'Plus Ultra' Squadron of the Royal Guard.
The air and land parade followed, and at its conclusion the King received news from the Chief of the Defense Staff regarding the completion of the events. The Kings and the Princess of Asturias moved, escorted by the Royal Escort Squadron, to the Royal Palace of Madrid, where the traditional commemorative reception for the National Holiday Day took place.
The commemoration of the National Day of Spain aims to “solemnly remember moments of collective history that are part of the common historical, cultural and social heritage, assumed as such by the vast majority of citizens,” explained the Royal Family. According to Law 18/1987, of October 7, which establishes the day of the National Holiday of Spain on October 12, “it symbolizes the historical anniversary in which Spain, about to conclude a process of construction of the State starting from our cultural and political plurality, and the integration of the Kingdoms of Spain into the same Monarchy, begins a period of linguistic and cultural projection beyond European limits.”
